Rebel Variety Show and Homecoming Victory

The UNLV Catholic Newman Center received the most homecoming points out of all the student organizations on campus taking home the trophy.

The prize for winning the Rebel Variety Show included a plaque that states, “Best student organization performance.”

Michael Kajkowski and Angela Semana were the homecoming chairs this year. Semana was in charge of the Rebel Variety Show while Kajkowski was responsible for the homecoming float. They were both are in charge of coordinating the book drive and window decorating.

Together they made a great team and were both part of the dance at the Rebel Variety Show.  Other participants of the performance included Morgan Bird, Wil Calloway, Kristine Bactad, Kalila Magbanua-Stein, Alanna Gallo, Chaz Sell, and Kirellos Setein. Bird and Kalila are the peer ministers at the Newman Center.

The routine they performed at the Variety Show consists of a comical skit and hip hop dance. They all collaborated ideas on the skit and dance. Choreographers included Magbanua-Stein, Gallo, Calloway and Semana.

“All the hard work and frustration paid off. We were all occupied with other activities in our busy lives, so it was a challenge for the entire group to meet up for practice on a weekly basis. But the time and effort that we all put in definitely paid off.  I was so excited I ran up and jumped on the stage to receive our plaque,” said Semana.

Semana said she wouldn’t have been able to win homecoming without putting her faith in God and lifting up the outcome in prayer.

Semana is grateful for the dependable team of volunteers and all the help she received during homecoming week and leading up to it. She encourages more participation in the coming years because the more participants we have, the easier and smoother the tasks will be in future years.

Besides the work load, Semana says it’s a great way to bond with the Newman community and really leave an impact on our school so they find out about the Newman Center.

Semana explains, “Homecoming is an opportunity to show school spirit at an extreme level. It is important to do a good job during homecoming week because all of our effort in the homecoming activities reflect the Newman center.  It’s the one event of the school year where the Newman Center gets to show the rest of the school what we can bring to the table.”

Masquerade for a good cause

Formal wear, just add a mask!

Formal wear, just add a mask!

Grab your ties, put on that killer dress and disguise behind that perfect mask.

This fall, the UNLV Catholic Newman Community is hosting a Masquerade Ball for all students to raise money to build a chapel on campus.

“We find it incredibly important to build this church because our center is too small for the number of parishioners we have,” says Grant Davis, 22, former evangelization and outreach peer minister.

The fundraiser will include dinner and a silent auction that will benefit the estimated 7,000 Catholic students that attend UNLV and need a bigger chapel to pray in.

The Masquerade Ball will be held Saturday November 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Marietta Tiberti Grand Hall in the Richard Tam Alumni Center at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Tickets are $50 per person and student tickets are $25. Click here to buy online.

If you would like to volunteer, you do not need to buy a ticket and we only need you between 6-8 for ticketing or 10-11 to tear down. Contact Zeamer@unlvnewman.com if you are interested.

The silent auction begins at 6:30 p.m. and will feature art from local artists. A dinner buffet will follow at 7 and music from local artists from 7:30-10. Wear cocktail attire and bring a mask or pick one up at the door.

Tickets are available by phone at 702-736-0887 or in person at the Newman Center, the orange building located behind IN & OUT next to the residence halls. Office is open Monday through Thursday from 10am-5pm. Please RSPV by Monday, October 26.

UNLV Catholic Rebels

The new tagline for the UNLV Catholic Newman Center is “Where faith and community collide.”

As the advertising and public relations intern at the Newman Center, I created this blog I as a way to build awareness of the activities and community the Newman Center has to offer. This blog will give information of past and upcoming events.

The Newman Center at UNLV is located south of the Student Union, next to the residence halls. The Newman Center mission statement is to form the Christian conscience through the Holy Spirit. To help individuals in their faith, educate for peace and justice, facilitate personal development and form leaders for church and society.

The Newman Center celebrates the Mass on Sundays at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. and Monday through Thursday at 12:05 p.m.

The Newman Center fulfills its mission statement through the activities it offers. Praise and worship is at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Grant Davis, former music and evangelization minister, explains the importance of this event.

“I love praise and worship because it gives Christians of different dominations a chance to unite and praise and worship our Lord as one. It is great because we can put aside our doctrines, traditions and petty differences and worship the same God and Jesus. It brings us together the way Jesus wanted us to,” said Davis.

The mission statement is also reached through social justice events and social events. The Kalila Magvanua-stein, social justice minister expresses why she wants new members to come to the mass and events.

“We develop friendships that grow on deeper levels since we share a special fire for God in our hearts. Our community is our second family and we’re thrilled for the new adventures to come with the new staff this year and many years to come,” said Magvanua-Stein.

Social justice events include anything from roller skating and bowling to going to Catholic Worker at 5:30 a.m. Other events include Bible study that are facilitated by students at the Newman Center.  The importance of Bible study is described by Davis.

“Many Christians today in modern society, such as myself, tend to forget how necessary it is to study the scripture. It is important so we may actually grow in our faith and live by the ideals of Jesus.  In discussion of scripture readings, we experience each other’s similar outlooks on scripture and realize we are not alone. We feel empowered by the Spirit when we make those special connections during discussion,” said Davis.

Through all the events we offer, the Catholic Newman Center is a place where faith and community collide.

To sign up for event updates and newsletters, email info@unlvnewman.com or add UNLV Newman: St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Newman Community to your Facebook friends.

Don’t wait to get involved.

Morgan Bird, evangelization minister, describes the Newman center as a big happy family. “It’s a support system of people that share the same beliefs and plus, we are crazy friendly,” said Bird.

Our Lady of the Rosary

This past Sunday, we celebrated Our Lady of the Rosary with a garden tea party after morning Mass. At the Newman Center, we pray a decade of the rosary for our capital campaign every Sunday before mass.

Fully understanding the beauty of the rosary lies in mediating on the mysteries of Christ. If you have not had the opportunity to experience the beauty of finding comfort through praying the rosary, I will share with you how I learned to mediate on the mysteries.

First you will need to know the format so I attached this link for your reference. After reading each mystery, meditate on how it can relate to your life. For example, in the sorrowful mysteries, Jesus endures the suffering of the cross. We can pray for the strength to get through our struggles in life knowing Jesus got up after he fell. This brings comfort because we have a God who understands our pain.

Praying the rosary has been an inspiration and comfort in my life and I hope it becomes the same for you.
